Simpli Auto Alt Text improves SEO and accessibility by converting messy uploaded filenames into readable alt text during the standard WordPress media ingestion workflow.
When an image is uploaded, the plugin hooks into wp_generate_attachment_metadata and:
- Reads the attachment using its media ID
- Extracts the core filename (without extension)
- Strips hyphens, dots, and underscores
- Applies title-case normalization with
ucwords() - Saves the result to the
_wp_attachment_image_altpost meta field
Example
summer-beach_vacation.2024.jpg becomes `Summer Beach Vacation 2024`
The plugin only sets alt text when none already exists, so manually entered alt text is never overwritten.
